All You Want to Know About a Pet Grooming Business

Pet groomers are hairstylists for pets. Some pet grooming jobs simply require that the pet be groomed in order to maximize his health. Other groomers are expected to groom dogs to the style of the breed. A bad pet grooming experience can ruin a pet’s coat, traumatize the pet, and even injure the pet. Therefore, it is crucial to choose the right pet grooming business.

The four largest pet grooming franchises currently in the United States are Preppy Pet, Aussie Pet Mobile, Central Bark and Pet Depot. Preppy Pet, Central Bark and Pet Depot all have additional services, such as pet daycare and obedience training. The Aussie Pet Mobile Franchise will travel to any location in order to groom pets for clients.

In addition to being a franchise, pet grooming businesses can be independently owned and operated or part of a larger pet store. Also, some veterinary clinics offer pet grooming services. For a higher price, reputable groomers will often come to your home in order to groom your pet.

Not all pet groomers are licensed. Anyone can become a groomer and even licensed groomers might lack the ability to work well with dogs. Also, even if a particular groomer is reputable, some dogs simply do not get along with some groomers. Therefore, you should keep searching until you find a groomer who gets along well with your pet.

Finding a Reputable Groomer

When choosing a pet groomer, begin by asking your neighbors and your vet about local groomers. Write down names and keep track of which groomers receive the best reviews. Try each groomer until you find a groomer that you and your pet are satisfied with.

Ask for proof of certification or licensing. Ask if the groomer consistently learns new grooming techniques and is part of a trade organization. Ask your groomer if she is a member of the National Dog Groomers Association. Finally, ask the groomer how long she has been grooming pets.

Opening a Pet Grooming Business

Unless your state requires a pet grooming license, the minimum requirements for opening a pet grooming business is to simply market your services. Pet groomers can operate out of their home or even make house calls. But a pet groomer is more likely to get clients and referrals if the groomer has a certification from a pet grooming school. Also, pet groomers are more likely to get jobs at larger pet grooming businesses with a pet grooming certification.

I’ve been grooming for 40 years. Worked for a few shops, evtlnualey opened my own place and ran it for 12 years. Sold it and semi-retired to a part time position 3 days a week. I average $ 100 a day in commissions, plus tips are usually another $ 10-20 a day. I work fast as a result of lots of experience, and average between $ 20 and $ 30 per hour. I’m currently working for 50%, but on some of my show dog clients I get 80%. When I started, 60% was pretty average for the industry, but it’s dropped since then due to higher overheads of insurance, taxes, etc. I’ll groom anywhere from 4-10 dogs a day, depending on the type of dog and the season. Christmas and other holidays are always busier and thus the potential to earn more goes up. I’ve been solicited to work at a PetSmart but turned them down. Same with a local grooming school that wanted me to teach for $ 15 an hour. Sorry, but the private salons are generally better quality and better pay. Most groomers are expected to keep their own area clean, and to clean it at the end of the day. Currently, groomers help with end of the day cleaning of the crates, bathing area and floors. Throughout the day we all pitch in answering phones as needed, washing drying and folding towels, etc. Some shops have bathers, some do not. I prefer to bathe my owns dogs as I’ve only ever worked with a very few competent bathers over the years. I want my dogs clean everywhere. It’s worth the extra time it takes me to do it myself. At the shop I owned, I had a full time receptionist to answer phones, pull and file cards and take care of the front desk in general. Currently, the owner manages the front and does very little grooming. Such tasks eat into grooming time and having a person up front makes groomers lives easier!

Your site is really helpful and you can see my site and give some advise on my site. Celebrating, showcasing and discovering dog groomers and sharing photos of their talented, in-style work! “Dogs have given us their absolute all. We are the center of their universe. We are the focus of their love and faith and trust. They serve us in return for scraps. It is without a doubt the best deal man has ever made.
